uilt in 1881 as
a summer home for the Sawyer family of New York City, The Victorian by the
Sea has been an inn since the early 1980s. The Sawyer's only daughter, Ruth,
became an award-winning author and published two books about her summers
spent in their seaside cottage. Her daughter married author Robert McCloskey,
famous for "Make Way for Duckling" and "Blueberries for Sal". A collection
of Sawyer's and McCloskey's books are included in the Inn's library for guests
to enjoy during their stay.
Some of our favorite things to do in the area...

1.
A hike or a drive to the top of nearby Mt. Battie. An incredible view of three
harbors can be enjoyed.
2. A two or three hour sail on one of the area's antique schooners.
3. Explore the coast or the inland lakes by kayak. Rentals are available at
Ducktrap Kayak or Maine Sport.
4.Stroll down our private path to the edge of a cliff overlooking Penobscot
Bay.
5. Boost the local economy! Camden and Lincolnville Beach have a nice assortment
of quaint shops and art galleries.
6. Enjoy the local brew...or vintage. Tour nearby Andrew's Brewery or Cellardoor
Winery for a real flavor of the area.
7. Ski at nearby Camden Snow Bowl. The only place in the U.S. where you can
ski or snowboard with a view of the Atlantic!
8. Have a lobster dinner on the dock or a fine French meal in an historic
farmhouse. The Camden and Lincolnville areas have world class restaurants.
9. Bar Harbor is an easy day trip from the inn. In the summer take a whale
watch boat and explore Mt. Desert Island.

10.
Find a peaceful spot at the inn to curl up with a good book or take a nap!
