Area Attractions

No longer considered just a stop-over for those traveling to Acadia National Park, the Camden Rockport Lincolnville area of Midcoast Maine offers something for everyone -- the adventurous as well as those seeking tranquility and serenity.

You don’t need a private yacht to enjoy the beauty of Penobscot Bay as there are many options to get on the water. Take a 2-hour sail on a three-masted schooner such as the Schooner Surprise www.camdenmainesailing.com or Schooner Yacht Heron www.woodenboatco.com. Or, if lighthouses or puffins are more to your liking, check out the Monhegan Boat Line www.monheganboat.com for a specialized trip. The Maine State Ferry at www.exploremaine.org/ferry offers ferry service to coastal islands of North Haven, Vinalhaven and Monhegan Island from nearby Rockland, and to Islesboro from Lincolnville Beach, just 1½ miles from the inn.

If you want to explore the coast under your own power, try Maine Sport Outfitters www.mainesport.com for a guided kayak tour. They also offer canoe and bicycle rentals. Or Ducktrap Kayaks, a neighbor of the inn, offers guided lake and sea kayak trips and instruction (207 236-8608).

You will find 25 miles of hiking trails for all skill levels in near-by Camden Hills State Park, just 2½ miles from the inn. The Park also offers a drive to the top of Mt. Battie for a breathtaking view of “Where the mountains meet the sea.”

Numerous trails for hiking and mountain biking are also available at the Camden Snow Bowl www.camdensnowbowl.com which offers family-friendly alpine and x-country ski trails, ice skating, snow tubing and tobogganing in the winter months.

Although the ocean this far north is generally considered too cold for swimming, many beautiful swimming beaches may be found in the region’s crystal-clear lakes. Bring your swimsuit and the innkeepers will provide beach towels and directions to their favorite holes.

Artists have long been attracted to the beauty of the region as evidenced by the plentiful galleries with fine and affordable art. Artisans and fine crafters graciously welcome guests to share the techniques of their crafts. Two of our favorites are Windsor Chairmakers www.windsorchair.com makers of fine hand-crafted furniture, and Swans Island Blankets www.swansislandblankets.com where they grow, sheer, dye, spin and weave heirloom-quality blankets. Both are just minutes from the inn.

The area is a paradise for antique shoppers and many values may still be found. Ask the innkeepers about their local favorite shops.

You may be surprised to learn that the Midcoast area boasts several wineries. Our nearby favorite is the Cellar Door with tasting room in a circa 1790 restored barn www.mainewine.com .

Music and theater lovers will be impressed with the offerings of Bay Chamber Concerts www.baychamberconcerts.org, the Camden Civic Theater www.camdencivictheater.com and Camden Opera House www.camdenoperahouse.com . The Camden Public Library www.camden.lib.me.us , an architectural and cultural gem in the town, offers many outdoor summertime concerts.

There is a museum to satisfy nearly every interest from lighthouses, to transportation to maritime history and ship building as well as art. Some of our favorites are the Owls Head Transportation Museum www.owlshead.org , the Penobscot Marine Museum (207 548-2529) and the Farnsworth Art Museum and Wyeth Center www.farnsworthmuseum.org .

For some travelers, the primary reason for their trip to Maine is the food! Mainers live close to the land and there is a strong movement within the restaurant community to use local, organic and seasonal products. This is a practice we also follow at the inn. Local fruits and vegetables are used in all but the winter season. Come taste the difference that fresh eggs and produce, seafood, and organic dairy products can make in your enjoyment of the meal. Menus from area favorites are available at the inn to help with your selections.

And of course, lobster is king. No visit to the region would be complete without a lobster roll or dinner, or several! The innkeepers will share their favorites with you, but before you leave, you will also have your own favorite.
